Description: The British Empire is one of the leading state legal units of the Modern Times. Рах Britannica is an example of coexisting of different in many respects elements in the whole but various political sphere. The evolution of the British Empire is multi-faceted and ambiguous process each of the periods of which demands thorough studies. One of the less studied problems is the problem connected with modernization of the British Empire process of its federalization in accordance with the conception of «imperial federalism». This concept influenced greatly the transformation of imperial political state sphere, determining the changes in the status of the colonies, their place and role in the process of updating the model of imperial ties. The changes in the status of colonies, in the turn, influenced the political and ideological processes in metropolis and in the whole empire. Having influenced the changes in the empire, ‘imperial federalism’ nevertheless has not destructed it. In this connection the actual scientific problem is the analysis of the concept of «imperial federalism» and the practice of its realization in Great Britain. In Ukrainian and post-Soviet historiography the studies of the process of federalization of the British Empire in the second half of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries and up to the present time were not put into one separate branch of legal studies. The researches by S. Bogomolov, M. Gleb, V. Grudzinskiy, D. Zhukov, I. Yakoviyk are the only exceptions. The aim of the research is in the studies of the concept of ‘imperial federalism’ patterns of formation and development in the process of updating the model of imperial ties in the British Empire in the second half of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries. The analysis of the concept of ‘imperial federalism’ and the practice of its realization in Great Britain indicates that the idea of federalism was rather popular in the second half of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries, because it was considered as the real alternative to the unitary by the form of governmental structure centralized national state (French model). Federalism was thought as the doctrine, the realization of the principles of which facilitates reconciliation of different interests of the multinational and multiconfessional units, provides their coexistence in the frames of unified political legal and economic system, either it is an empire or a national state.
